USB 3.1 SuperSpeed+ Gen 1 VS Gen 2
USB 3.1 is the latest USB standard, defined by USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum, Inc.), which is divided into 2 categories: Generation 1 (Gen 1) and Generation 2 (Gen 2). Generation 1 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) is the new name for USB 3.0, and is suitable for data rates up to 5 Gb/s. USB 3.1 Gen 2 is the 'real' USB 3.1 cable and suitable for data rates up to 10 Gb/s. Finally, there are cables with different PD (Power Delivery) profiles, which support a voltage of up to 20 V and a current of up to 5 A (maximum 100 W).
The boundary between 'normal speed' charging and 'significantly longer charging' lies at the point where the voltage has decreased by 0.5V due to the longer distance that current has to bridge. If your device uses power directly instead of a battery that is being charged, it may fail when the voltage becomes too low due to the length of the cable.
